A Sonic Weather Report Daily Arts Alert ... by Cathleen Bond Thursday Nov. 23 Is it a concert, is it technology, or is it an art show? Multimedia artist Gordon Monahan has combined all three disciplines and a bit more into When It Rains.
Gallery One2One helps us understand the new exhibit: "Monahan's homemade sculptures play pre-programmed musical sequences, triggered by data input from audience members. The data is processed through a computerized, random decision-making-process that determines which sequences are played and how many sequences are layered upon each other." Monahan, who received a Music Canada Musique 2000 commission for this, has worked with the assumption that music has always existed in nature. He imposes technological control over these natural, musical sounds "in order to question our assumptions of what music is, and where it comes from."
Gallery One2One 326 Carlaw St. Free, to Nov. 26 (416) 405-9996
