Ho Ho Ho ... More Music!
Daily Arts Alert ... by Cathleen Bond
Friday Dec. 8

Yesterday we tickled your fancy with the Sugar Plum Fairy and late breaking Nutcracker news. Today we've got a great array of holiday music for you and your family over the next couple of days. And please give us a hand. If you know of any other upcoming musical feasts, share the joyous news!

  • Vancouver Chamber Choir: Get ready to sing Gloria in Vancouver tonight as the Vancouver Chamber Choir performs a great program of Bach and Vivaldi Christmas classics. One of my personal favourites is Bach's Christmas Oratorio. Dec. 8 at the Orpheum Theatre. (604) 738-6822

  • Holiday Harmonies: Tonight in North Van, The North Shore Light Operatic Society has assembled a fabulous collection of song. (604) 984-4484

  • The Messiah: In Calgary, Handel's pulling in this weekend with the one and only. You got it! The gorgeously rendered Messiah. Presented by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Dec. 8 and 9 at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. (403) 299-8888

  • Christmas with the Bach Choir: Moving ahead to Saturday ... In Vancouver a choir of over 400 voices sing traditional Christmas music at the Orpheum. That should be heard all the way to Seattle. Orpheum Theatre. (604) 280-3311

  • Festival of Carols: In Toronto, Sunday night's Toronto Symphony concert features the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, with a promising program of classical Christmas carols. (416) 872-4255

  • Anne Murray: Greatest hits and seasonal favourites, at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Dec. 16 and 17. A limited number of Live Rush tickets are available.

  • Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir: Tonight and Saturday, St. James United Church, 463 Ste. Catherine St. W. (514) 932-8731

  • Frank Mills' Celebration of Christmas: Hear Joy To the World, Silent Night, White Christmas and many more ... as the singer makes a tour through Nova Scotia this month. The famed performers swears this is his "farewell tour," which makes it all the more a must-see.

  • Christmas Lights Tour through Halifax: The trolley named Desire takes you on a two-hour tour of twinkling colors, every night until Jan. 3. (902) 423-6242

  • Half-Baked? Well, here's an idea -- an art gallery in Vancouver is now in the business of selling ideas. Artspeak Gallery is selling "conceptual ownership" of unexecuted ideas by some of Canada's best-known installation artists. "In the crowded field of cultural products, a good idea is invaluable."

Fiona Banner, Stan Douglas and Judy Radul are among the donors to this unique sell-off. It's all in the interest of drumming up interest and annual memberships for Artspeak. If you buy an idea, you'll get a suitable-for-framing certificate.

  • Fine Tuning: Rex Murphy tackles one of the most pressing issues that comes up every year at this time. On Cross Country Checkup (Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. ET on CBC Radio One) the master complainer takes your whining and whinging about the commercialization of Christmas. "Has Christmas become too commercial? If so, what should we do about it?"

  • Nutcrackers from Coast to Coast: Check out the seasonal ballet productions of Tchaikovsky's Christmas classic.
