Much Musicale Daily Arts Alert ... by Cathleen Bond Friday, Jan. 12
Parisotto will be joined by two soloistst: Richard Roberts, the OSM's concertmaster since 1982, and accordionist James Hiscott, who is making his OSM debut. Roberts, a highly respected soloist and chamber musician will play the First Concerto (premiered in 1853) by the Polish violinist and poser Henryk Wieniawski. James Hiscott, an accordionist, CBC radio producer and composer appears at this performance wearing two hats. He composed and will perform Dancing on Wings of Fire (1992), "a serious composition for accordion and orchestra inspired by the cremation ceremony of Balinese Hinduism." The program also includes some Hayden, a bit of Wagner and some Strauss. That's this Sunday at 2:30 pm.
Drawing Time: The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia gets into its winter season with an education program opening Saturday (Jan. 13 to April 8). Drawing with Light is an exhibition that illustrates how light functions in relation to the photographic camera: "The title of this project is a direct play on the Greek root of the word 'photography.' Photos means 'light' and graphos means 'to draw or write'." The exhibit uses the work of 12 contemporary Canadian photographers, borrowed from the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, to illustrate the series. The gallery also has a new session of Saturday Art Classes for children, beginning Saturday as well. It's sounds like a great cultural-combo pack for youngsters interested in art. Fine Tuning: Dressing for the Oscars is a behind-the-scenes look at the fierce battle to get the best dress at the Academy Awards. Go behind the scenes with three top designers as they work feverishly to have top stars wear their designs to the big show. On The Passionate Eye, Sunday night at 10 ET on CBC Newsworld.
