by Cathleen Bond

In 1983 Canadian singer-songwriter Stan Rogers died, and with him went one of Canada's most distinctive voices.

Stan Rogers To honour Rogers' incredible contribution to song the Jane Mallet Theatre is presenting Stan Rogers: A Matter of Heart. Rather than a biography of the artist's life, the company has chosen to mount a musical revue.

Rogers wrote about common Canadians and the intricate dramas that surrounded their lives. A Matter of Heart seized upon the intrinsic dramatic potential of the songs and added four characters to create a new Canadian musical experience.

Associate musical director Paul Mills seems the perfect man for this creative task. Mills was a close personal friend of Rogers (who produced the musician's records as well as playing with him on-stage.) He'll be joined by Bob Ashley who brings a more theatrical element to the equation. Not to say that Bob doesn't have some music in his bones. His creative credentials include Jacques Brel is Alive and Living in Paris, as well as doing some time with The Guess Who.

    Running With the Dogs
Photographer Shari Hatt is currently showing her Dogs at grunt. Sounds a tad bestial doesn't it? Well actually grabbing a show at grunt is quite an honour. grunt is a Vancouver artist centre, which was founded way back in 1984.

DogsThe centre's mission is to program exciting and thought provoking exhibitions, performances, artist talks, publications and special projects by established and emerging artists. So don't sit on the porch -- run with the pack and see Dogs. Hatt's gotten up close and VERY personal with 52 of her canine pals. According to the website, a special bonus: "grunt will present Hatt's play card series '52 men in my bedroom' to the first 5000 visitors to the gallery."

    Taming a Shrew
There's nothing like getting outside to get a dose of the bard, and this year The Dream in High Park is mounting Shrew -- a modern retelling of Shakespeare's classic The Taming of the Shrew. Don't forget your picnic basket and a bottle of wine, and be the first to see what wondrous dreams these modern mortals make of Will's fine old work. Pssst ... Get there early if you want a good seat. The show previews July 11t and 12, then opens July 13 and runs Tuesdays to Saturdays until August 28th, in Toronto's High Park. 8 p.m. showtime.

    Fine Tuning
Tonight Life & Times is looking at one of Canada's premier funny ladies, Mary Walsh. Walsh is known for her work on Codco and This Hour Has 22 Minutes. Like I had to tell you that! 9 p.m. on CBC TV.

    Drop me a line.
