Surrealists, Dadaists, photofans and modern art lovers everywhere should plan a stop at the Art Gallery of Ontario to see the Man Ray show. But before we get into the times and dates, let's dip into the historical pool for a
refresher.
Emmanuel Radnisky was born in Philadelphia back in 1890. He
adopted the moniker Man Ray, to avoid being teased (not because it sounded so fab). From an early age Ray showed great promise. He turned down a scholarship in architecture to study art and had his first one-man painting
exhibition at the ripe old age of 25.
These were the days of Cubism and Ray
quickly fell in with Marcel Duchamp and in love with photography. He bought his first camera, followed Duchamp to Paris, thus beginning a creative collaboration that spanned 55 years. Ray joined the Parisian Dada
group, the Surrealists, spent 10 years in Hollywood in the 1940s, but
ultimately returned to his adopted homeland of France.
The name Ray is synonymous with the avant garde. He "experimented with every conceivable medium, invented a number of his own and influenced several
generations of artists."
His major contributions fall into the categories of painting, sculpture and photography, including film." Ray's career spanned six decades. He died at 86 still living in Paris.
The show at the AGO features 100 photographic portraits of 20th century literary and cultural icons. Included will be shots of James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, Picasso and Marcel Duchamp among others.

Musical Wives
The Neptune Theatre in Nova Scotia is mounting a performance of War Brides - A Musical. Some of you might remember the time. The boys were coming back
from World War II, and a lot of them didn't come back alone. How did these wives from all over the globe fit into North American society? Did they like it? Did the North American dream live up to its promise? War Brides - A
Musical is based on the book by Grahame Woods, with music and lyrics by Joey
Miller.
