Always at the vanguard of art, the Diane Farris Gallery is launching a new solo exhibit this weekend by Seattle based shutterbug Phil Borges. The show features a wide variety of new black and white selectively sepia toned fiber
base prints, shot in Siberia, Mongolia, the Philippines, Peru, and the Ecuadorian Amazon.
The exhibit is entitled Animists: The Spirit of Place and
"reflects upon a time when we were all deeply bonded to the place where we
lived." The artist states: "It was a spiritual connection seen to be vital
for maintaining both the health of the community and the well being of the
individual." During the Enlightenment this spiritual communication fell out
of favour. There are only a few traditional cultures remaining who
spiritually communicate with their environment. These photographs depict some
of these people for whom the environment still holds a sacred enchantment,
"....people who still know the The Spirit of Place." If you can't make it to
opening, try and catch Phil Borges when he gives a talk about his art later
this month.

What About the Youth?
If you'd like to know who the next Canadian Yo Yo Ma might be, you should
swing over to the Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary Saturday night to hear the
National Youth Orchestra. Formed in 1960, over 1900 of Canada's finest "young
musicians have received orchestral training not available through any other
institution."
After three decades the NYO is held in high esteem throughout
the international music community. The NSO's alumni forms the majority of all
Canadian orchestras. Others are playing in cities around the globe. And some
have remained at the NSO to train the next generation.
The NSO isn't about
money. It's a non-profit organization and you can't buy your way in. You've
got to have talent. There's a "nominal fee for the 6-7 week session," plus
bursaries are in place to help those who can't afford it. The faculty is
"made up of highly regarded instructors and alumni from some of the premier
orchestras of North America and Europe." Sounds like the musical wave of the
future to me.

Please Sir We Want MORE!!
To meet public demand, Halifax's Neptune Theatre is mounting the musical
Oliver! The team that put together last year's sell-out The Wizard of Oz is
back with Dickens's tale of the orphan with the heart of gold. Need I say
more?

And that's it for now. I'm heading north to dip my toes in the lake. A place
where there's NO phone line. Wish me luck without technological umbilical
cord and have a great long weekend. See you on Tuesday ... Cathleen
