Arts Alert
Thursday, Aug. 10

by Cathleen Bond

Haligonians are famous for more than the world's finest lobsters and Salter Street Films (the gang that keeps Canadians laughing with the likes of Codco and This Hour Has 22 Minutes). They've got a booming fine arts scene, which is currently being augmented by the Halifax Exhibition of International Contemporary Art aka HX.

According to local legend, three years ago those in the painterly know got together and headed across the big pond to "spend a few heady weeks with the best of international contemporary art. Events had conspired to cram a number of the world's most famous exhibitions - the Venice Biennale, the twice-a-decade Documenta roundup in Kassel, Germany, and the Sculpture Project that fills the streets of nearby Muenster every 10 years - into a single season."

As you can imagine, our art-loving Haligonians were somewhat humbled by what they saw. However, not the proud Canadian frontier spirit soon took root, and by the end of this September "nearly every art space in Halifax will have hosted one or another of the 14 exhibitions with a substantial international component, that make up HX."

Here's a sampling of what you can hope to see at the HX's inaugural bash:

  • At Dalhousie University's art gallery, curator Susan Gibson is dishing up some very hot Icelandic art.

  • St. Mary's University is covering the Hong Kong beat.

  • Futuristic art is being featured at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia

If you like your architecture with plenty of colour and a big sense of visual bang, be sure to grab the latest edition of Canadian Architect. The mag's cover story features IKOY Partnerships's construction of two buildings at the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) in Shilo Manitoba. Herbert Enns is on hand to talk about IKOY's design and construction practices, as well as digging into some of the political dirt that surrounded the Shilo project.

  • Feeling Jazzy?
Halifax jazz trio Alive and Well are still kicking. After an eight year hiatus, alto sax man Don Palmer, bassist Skip Beckwith and drummer Jerry Granelli are not only jamming together again, they've just released a new CD entitled Way Out East. The CD is a riff on Sonny Rollins' seminal 1957 recording Way Out West. Alive and Well pays homage to Rollins' style, and even covers I'm An Old Cowhand laying on a reggae wobble. Sounds like fun. Welcome back Alive and Well.
